SURROUNDING AREA
The apartments on Achtergracht are located in the old city centre. With on one side the river 'Amstel' and on the other side the square 'Frederiksplein', the direct surroundings of the Achtergracht have always been full of activity. Since 1681 ships coming from Utrecht could be found on the river Amstel and Achtergracht. On Frederiksplein there was always something going on. Different animal markets were held on and around the square and regularly a circus or fair took place. Theatre Carré often organized performances and in 1804 the first manned balloon took off from the square.
